Once considered a hub for the massive growth of the metro Phoenix area, the West Valley was the starting point for construction of both the Arizona Grand Canal and Grand Avenue. Today, newer freeways have enhanced this community’s connectivity to the Central Valley and reinvigorated growth in the area.
Education: In Goodyear, more than 10,000 K-12 students are served by four elementary school districts and two high school districts. The Glendale Elementary School District (grades K-8) consists of 17 schools and more than 20,000 students, as well as the Glendale Union High School District, currently recognized as an “A” district by the Arizona Department of Education. Additionally, the West Valley is home to several college campuses including Estrella Mountain Community College, Glendale Community College, Arizona State University – West Campus, and the Thunderbird School of Global Management, among others.
Shopping & Dining: Outdoor shopping malls abound in the West Valley! The Market at Estrella Falls has a Harkins Theatre, local Italian eatery Oregano’s Pizza Bistro, and big box retailers like PETCO and Old Navy, while Canyon Trails Towne Center which features a Super Target and a wide variety of other retailers. Arrowhead Towne Center offers a traditional shopping mall experience, and the Westgate Entertainment District, located near the University of Phoenix Stadium, is a major highlight with bars and restaurants like Saddle Ranch, Yard House, Buffalo Wild Wings, and Bar Louie plus tons of shopping from both unique retailers and national brands!
Entertainment: The West Valley offers more than 20,000 acres of recreational parks featuring miles of hiking, biking, running, camping, and picnicking trails and paths including Rio Vista Park, White Tank Mountain Regional Park, North Mountain Park, and Estrella Mountain Park. For sports enthusiasts, the West Valley is home to the University of Phoenix Stadium (home of the Arizona Cardinals), Gila River Arena (home of the Phoenix Coyotes), and several Spring Training Ballparks, which host teams including the Cleveland Indians, Cincinnati Reds, Seattle Mariners, San Diego Padres, Los Angeles Dodgers, Chicago White Sox, Kansas City Royals, and Texas Rangers.
Unique to the West Valley: Luke Air Force Base is located in the West Valley, 7 miles west of the central business district of Glendale. The base is home to the new F-35 training program and also serves as steward of the Barry M. Goldwater Range, 1.1 million acres of relatively undisturbed Sonoran Desert, which serves as a refuge for many of Arizona’s endangered species.
